Technological Learning and Competitiveness in the Autoparts and Petrochemical Industries in Mexico

This article examines the learning processes and the generation of technical capabil ities in the autoparts and petrochemical industries in Mexico, as part of an inter national competitive process. This analysis explores the process through which technology is generated and diffused and is useful as a source of long-term competi tion. Based upon in-depth interviews in more than fifty companies, the study con cludes that both industries have experienced an important learning process, although in some cases it has been limited, which has enabled many companies to accumulate important productive capabilities but scarce technological capabilities. The market position of the companies has been maintained or has been better off as a result of this technological learning process.
